    Ig cover

Just tried out that sound deadened ign. cover. Barely any improvement if any. My engine only produces this ringing sound until it is up to full operating tempature. I believe the ringing is coming from the ignition timing wheel.

I kinda think my noise that is like that, is when its idling and because 3 of my cyls are below spec, the engine runs good but I suspect that every single stroke of those pistons isnt the same.. sometimes it gets a little mouthfull of compression and hits harder and then weaker back and forth.. get three of em doin that and it makes it lurchy.. I have definatly noticed it coming out of sync as the comps went up and lately back down again and have had to adjust. Gets real noisy when they are off. And I agree about the timing/ignition unit.. it has a sound. And little noises from that chain probably come right thru the crank and into that thing.. just a guess.. either that or I have bad rod bearings on 1, 2 or 3 or all hehe.. but I really doubt that because Ive run the bike up to 5 or 6k and it doesnt act like theres anything wrong with the low end. Well see.. someday when I open her up.. gotta be some reason for that rubber dampener.

        ign. timing wheel

I'm trying a little experiment. I have a spare timing wheel which I cut out a piece of gasket material and attached it to the backside with ATV. I did it carefully so it would remain in balance. That wheel does not resonate anymore when tapped. Gonna let it dry overnite and try it out tomorrow.

Most of the time if i hear a noise while riding i will think what is that sound? but i think that it is because of the vents in my helmet.Air makes alot of noise especially at around 55 + mph.

            ign. cover

The damping of the timing wheel didn't do jack to quiet anything down. It seems like this noise is coming more from the primary gear shaft/starter clutch area. Hy-Vo chain does seem to have some excessive slack in it. Some of these XS engines are noisier than others. Solution: forget about it and ride on.
