I've got an 80 LG that needs replating of the grab bar, carb covers and swing arm bearing covers.
Any suggestions on how, who or where to get it done. And approx cost.

I saw a kit on www.caswellplating.com
that looks promising. I have the same needs for my LG. The smaller kit was around $45 and looks to be for touch-ups.
My main bad spots are on the grab bar, headlight ring, and gascap.

The original plating is fake gold. Replacing it with real gold plating is going to be spendy.
True, any ideas for good looking alternatives.

No I've waited 25 years to get my LG and a ride that runs this well deserves to look just as good. I am looking for a sissy bar or backrest / rack for it though.

I actually bought a gold plating kit a few years back. I have not taken it out of the box for a while but I am sure it still works.
The hardest part of gold plating is the polishing. The higher shine you have before you start, the better the end result. I plated some coins back when I got the kit. One I still keep in my wallet. The kit worked well because the coin still has it's shiny gold on it.
I don't think I would want to try plating all that material. A small bottle of 1 oz of gold is about $39 if I remember correctly. Plus there is also a need for the chrome remover solution. It would take several ounces to do that much. Not too mention all the hours of polishing. To gold plate it, I think you would end up being very expensive.
I had plans to get around and try plating some pieces like the gas cap and see how it works out. It will take time plus you have to strip the chrome down to the nickel underneath it first. I got an extra plate for my gas cap that I need to finally get around too.
Maybe once I get that piece done, I can get an idea of time and material cost it takes to do parts. Perhaps do it as a service for XS1100 people. Or people can but the kit themselves an try it. It is called lifetime gold. Lifetime gold
