  • Clutch Bolt Torque

OK, I'm putting my clutch back together and I can't find how tight I'm supposed to tighten the six bolts that go through the springs and hold the whole clutch together. I can't find it in the manual. on the CD I have, or in a couple of searches of this site. The bolts look to be a high grade bolt but they screw into aluminum so I'm not sure why the high grade bolt. Right now I have them at 84 in/lbs (7 ft/lbs). That is not very tight but I don't want to strip them out. Anybody know?

When I did the clutch on that XS650, I used German specks. Good-n-Tight. There is ALOT of pressure on those bolts. Don't want them to shear off the heads. ( hard steal )

Hi, Bob...I think I met you a couple of years ago at the Y-Triple Rally in McGregor.

I just changed a clutch on the motor I swapped in...proper torque on the 6 bolts is 7.5 ft-lbs, so you're really close.

.. you are right on the money Bob, that is all the torque that's required for a bolt that size
84 to 108 inch pounds i would not go any farther than 84
even if they were a little looser the spring tension would keep them from backing out
if you want to be sure then add one drop of Lock Tite blue to each bolt

            Czekus21,

Thanks for the info. I’ve used that same tactic for most of my life (German background) but I’ve broken a lot of things. I’m little afraid of breaking something on the old XS. Especially this time of year, don’t want it down when I could be riding it. I do have other bikes to ride but the XS is one of my favorites.

Ely is just south of Cedar Rapids (east central Iowa). I get over your way a couple times a year. I’m originally from Creighton Nebraska (90 mile west of Sioux City). When I ride back home I like to swing up into South Dakota and ride up around along the Missouri river to the Front Randell dam and then back south. Just made the trip a few weeks ago. Stopped in Tindel SD to see I guy that I had gone to high school with. Maybe I can swing up to Sioux Falls one of these times and take a look at your bike.

            BikerHawk,

That be me. Are you having a rally up this direction this year? Or maybe it’s over, I can’t remember just what time of the year it was. I wished I would have had more time to spend with you guys.

Ended up buying a Plexifairing like a couple of the guys in your group had. You may remember the big old ugly windshield I had, the Plexifairng raised my gas mileage by 3.5 mpg and still give me great wind protection.

I was just up that direction Friday. Had to go up to Dorchester IA (on the Minnesota boarder) and rode on up to LaCrosse Wisconsin and then back down along the Mississippi. Still a great ride but it was already getting crowded with it being a holiday weekend.

Thanks for the info. I guess I got lucky.

Thanks for the info. Think I'll skip the Lock Tite but may pull the cover after I have ridden it a while to recheck the bolt torque.

            Thanks all,
            Bob

              Hi Bob--

We're gathering this weekend, July 8-10, in West Salem, WI, at Veterans Memorial Park. It's turning into a fairly good event--we had around 15 bikes last year, and Henry Lange, our "host," arranged for some cool donations, including 150 free cans of beer from City Brewery in LaCrosse.

Needless to say, City Brewery was invited to sponsor this year's rally also.
