  • normal oil loss?

I rode my 1980 LG down to LA from Oakland last week. When I started the trip, my oil level was pretty evenly between the two hash marks in the sight glass. I averaged 70-85mph there on the I-5 and back on the 1/101. Both ways I lost enough oil to bring the level from halfway to a quarter of the way to the bottom.

It's a black engine, so I figure it runs a little hotter. It does have a Kerker oil cooler, but this seems to me, like a normal amount of oil to lose after a few hundred miles @ 75mph?

Just wondering if that sounds right.

    Thanks!

Tolerances are a little looser in the older air-cooled engines to help prevent siezing and coking in traffic and such....

I would typically lose a quart per 3000 miles...in hot weather...

Running 20w50 castroil resulted in the least loss in these hot summer months.

I have a 78 XS750 which I have just started to run the Castrol 20w50 in also. It uses less oil now also.
