I'm swapping out motors on my 2 XS11's...putting the F motor, with a good transmission, into the H. My question: has anyone been successful pulling the motor out w/o disassembling the top end? I'm trying to leave all (cams, gaskets, etc.) undisturbed if possible, but I'm not sure the motor will clear the frame up front. Whady'all think?

You will need to remove the valve cover, but the rest of the top end can stay intact. Pulling the cams really isn't that difficult, and it will give you a little more room. Make sure to remove the oil filter cup also.
I have changed mine a few times and that is what I have found to work. To make it easier to move the engines around, a long round wooden rod like a broom hamdle slid through the engine supports works well. It gives you a good non slip lifting handle.

Thanx for the quick reply, John...that's kind of what I've figured, looking at the space available. Oil filter & cooler spacer are already off. I was just hoping not to disturb the valve cover gasket and have to replace it...I'm a cheap bastard...
I've had the entire top end down before, and that job doesn't scare me at all...I'm just looking for the least intrusive and time-consuming means possible. I'm supposed to be leaving next Friday for a Y-Triples event in Wisconsin, and time is critical so I can chase problems and gain some trust in the new motor before then.Tom Hunt

I pulled my engine 5 years ago, and I don't remember having to pull the valve cover off first, and after my recent fight with my valve cover checking clearances, I'm sure I didn't! You've already got the oil cooler/filter chamber off, that's the biggest hurdle, it will tilt in the frame and come right out the side! Just helps to have several sets of hands to help heft it if you don't have a fancy wench and lift set! I also can't remember which side to take it out thru....I think the left, so once you get the final drive clear of the driveshaft link area, the rest follows easily!

I did have the help of my lovely and talented wife (no, she's not a wench...I enjoy living here...but one helluva biker chick). We pulled the bad motor last night and got the good one in the frame first thing this AM. Nw to get back out there and button things up...oh yeah, and also replace a clutch...Tom Hunt

My brother and I have removed XS11 engines fully intact...though I wouldn't suggest it - it is a *lot* easier if you remove the cam cover.1979 XS11F Standard - Maya - 1196cc (out of order)

SUCCESS!!
The swap is completed and is running beautifully, even before adjusting the carbs for the new motor. It feels like a totally different bike...feeling the front wheel come off the ground in 1st gear is new for me...
I think this new motor is healthier in all respects than the old one was. We'll see what kind of mileage I get...really hoping to improve from the 27 mpg average I had been getting. I put the carbs I had been running on the new motor...if mileage stays poor, I'll try the other set, but I'm running out of time before I leave on my ride Friday.Tom Hunt
