Hey guys,

I am trying to take apart my forks and I am having difficulty getting the bottom screw out. Any suggeztions? I have tried jambing a piece of wood down inside to keep it for spinning but that doesn't work.
Help please!?

Thanks,

If disassembled, reassemble the fork. Turn the fork upside down on a rag on the floor. Push downwards. This compresses the spring and all the inner guts and helps prevent them from spinning. A zap with an air impact gun, or an impact driver is helpful.

What Prom said,

But if you don't have access to an impact or air wrench, then you can either get a fitting for a reversible drill, or just cut off some of the allen wrench that fits it, and stick it in the end of your drill, and use it to spin the bolt loose!

The tip I used is a wooden broom handle jammed down the fork tube then loosen with allen from axle end. Worked fine for me.

FRONT FORKS

Hey guys,

Say thanks for the tips. I ended up shoving the stick back in and getting on it with a impact wrench, which did the trick. They both came off no problem. It started out to be a big hassel, but so far has turned out ok. Hey TOP CAT could you put in the tech tips this procedure for other guys that may flail at doing this. Also as a tip to everyone, loosen the top nut while the shock is still in the tripple tree, it makes a GREAT clamp, and you will reduce the risk in damaging the slider tube. I figured that one out, after it was to late. Made me feel pretty stupid. duuuuuh, which way did he go?

disassembly & assembly of the front forks

Hey everyone!
I just learned something new that I'd like to share. On this whole disassembly thing I found an easier way than shoving a broomstick down the throat of the shock. It can be done one of two ways. You can double nut a .500" bolt and use a socket with a long enough extensionthat will reach down inside to the top of the stop which has a head like a torx bit. The head of the .500" bolt will fit right in the torx grooves and will allow you to turn the bottom allen head screw with no problem, or if you have the resources to do it with, make a tool by welding the .500" bolt to a tube, rod, or an extension that is long eough to reach down inside. I will make a drawing and submit it so every one can see what I mean if there is any misunderstanding.

Keep it out of the ditch!
