  • Turn signal probs!

My left turn signal isnt working on my 81H. The right one does. I have replaced both the front and back bulbs. I have checked the wires and havent found any probs there.
Does this mean the switch is out?
If not, what is it? and
If it is then can it be fixed or do I have to buy a whole new control pod?
    Any insite would be appreciated.

    Wayne,
Double check the connector on the left side of the frame, under the tank where the control pod wires connect. This is a problem area, gets dinged a lot when installing/removing the tank.

I had two broken wires there, and one bad pin in the connector.

I also had to clean the switch, not too difficult, watch for parts flying out. Could be a lose solder joint in there . . .

Does only one of the bulbs not work or are both out on the one side? Does one come on but not blink?

I would look at the switch then as Danny said.

I've usually found the bulb socket itself to be at fault - corroded.

Do you have a voltmeter to see if you have voltage at the socket and plugs along the way from the Signal fuse?

OK i have found the problem here.
I opened the handlebar switch casing and found several sodered connections broken. These are the connections to the small switch board inside.
I couldnt get all three wires resodered to the board SO, I will have to stop by the dealer and see if I can buy that whole new switch mechanism.
Does anyone else have any suggestions or a line on were I can get this part.
I assume that the switch will have to come with the wires and all.
              Thanks for all your help.

I see them on Ebay all the time. Would probably be the best/cheapest place to find them.

I'm curious tho, why couldn't you get the wires soldered back onto the board? I'm asking because not everybody is experienced with soldering, especially small circuit boards, and lack the experience/knowledge to do this. If this is true in your case, then maybe drop by your local TV/Electronics repair shop and see if they can do it for you. Shouldn't be too expensive.

Good idea about the repair store Brian, Thanks!
And yes the reason I cant do it is because I am not good with small boards nor have the proper equipment, I have a BIG 30 yr old solder gun and little experience. All I accomplished is a really BAD attitude by the time i was done.

Believe it or not, I once did a quick and dirty solder repair job in college using a cheap cigar and a straight pin. Stick the head of the pin into the cigar, light it and puff 'til the pin is hot. Very fine soldering iron.
