My headlight basket (1980 Standard) is well and truly thrashed- it was functional until I took it apart to chase down some electrical gremlins. It seems that the screws/bolts were holding it together. I'm more interested in getting functional illumination than a historically correct bike. Has anyone gone with aftermarket headlamps here? I seem to remember some talk about this some time ago, but I can't remember if it was for a headlight, or auxilliary lights. Can I use an automotive foglight-type assembly, that just bolts onto something I assemble? What numbers do I have to look at? 55 watts? How many lumens? Grab a H-D surplus light? I really wanna get this thing on the road.

Hey Iron Llama,
MikesXS has lots of headlight buckets and such, both round and rectangle, see below for example:
Any of the headlight assemblies will match up with your exisitng headlight plug, so you'll still have your low and high beams! IF you try to use a set of fog lights, like trying to use a pair side by side, you'll have to do some fancy wiring to get one to be low beam, and the other to be high beam!
The description for the rectangular one above says for use as a flat tracker? or something. I"m not sure if it has the proper adjustment screws for aligning its beam sideways? The other round bucket assemblies should have the proper alignment screws, if you don't mind a ROUND light on your Standard? You'll want the 7" round size! Happy shopping!

Then go to the electrical, and then headlight section, just don't tell them it's for an XS11!!

Thanks for the tip. I may try to get the basket I have fixed for now, and find something I can put on there as a more permanent solution. This thing is going to be more of a ratbike than anything else; I didn't pay that much for it and I just want it as a knock-around daily rider. It is a load of fun though, once it's (finally) road-worthy I'm sure I'll be motivated to get it to something that looks quite nice, and maybe even somewhat restored.Rule 1: Pillage, then burn.
