does any one know if the handle bars from a 78 650 special would fit a 79 xs 1100 standard? and if not where can i find some.

    Gary,

The special bars will phisically fit the triple tree, but you'll have other issues to deal with:

    1. The M/C hose from the standard will be too short (the special bars have an upsweep)

    2. The master cylinder on the special is angled (again the upsweep) so the reservoir is level. The standard M/C is flat.

    3. The clutch cable on the special is longer than the standard.

    4. The special throttle cable is longer.

The switches have enough length to work, but all the rest of the stuff - AARRRGH!

I have special handle bars on my standard, and setbacks. The MC hose was stretched, so I had a new SS one made at a local shop. The MC is at an angle, but still works fine. The clutch and throttle cable worked fine as is. I have riden it like this for 17 years.
