XS1100LG - Emergency lights & electricals

Howdy,

Recently acquired a beautifully maintained 1980 Midnight Special. Noticed the hazard light switch on the left handle bar controls which don't appear to be on the '78E or '79F & SF models. Doesn't currently work - in fact I think it kills the turns if one side is blinking when I switch the hazard on. Anything especially special to keep an eye out for tracing this one? Thanks!

Anyone out there still have them working?

All my other electricals seem to work the way they should, but couple questions:

1) Should I be worried if my turn signal flashing causes the main light to dim and bright with the flash? I am thinking this is not good. Bad ground, maybe?

2) what is the deal the the headlamp light. Sometimes when I start it appears to be half on - kinda glowing a little. Otherwise I don't know what it is for. just a quick trip light to let you know in the daytime when your running lights are out?

Finally - who'da thunk, the tail light on my 1100LG busted and I was able to replace it with the exact same Stanley molding from my lil' XS400F. Lol! Sure makes me appreciate the time I spent playing w/jigsaw puzzles as a kid.

Hey Patrick,

The ER flashers use a separate flasher unit, so it's probably messed up/frozen/corroded. IIRC, it's near the middle of the frame, battery area, not the right hand side. It's a standard 2 prong flasher....doesn't need the self cancelling stuff! I replaced mine with an electronic one, again due to LEDs!

Your dimming lights probably means you need to do a good cleaning of all contacts/connectors in the wiring harness, but mine did dim a little when I would hit the brakes, so that's why I did my complete LED conversion of brakes and turns!

After cleaning connections, then if you have flickering, then you may need to check/trouble shoot your RLU and such!

Just fixed the hazard flasher switch on my 80 G. Two of the wires had seperated from the terminals on the switch. Resoldered them ( not easy as one terminal was almost corroded off) and it works now. Lots of junk and insect remains in there. Not too bad to take apart, just watch where all the small parts for the turn signal switch go. While your in there clean the contacts on the turn signal switch and lube it good.

The turn signals go through a set of contacts on the harzard switch to the turn signal switch, but the turn signal switch is where the the left and right split off, hence a bad hazard switch will effect both left and right, whereas if one is good and the other bad it's the turn signal switch.
