  • Low RPM Issues

Good day everybody, im new to the site, and just bought a XS1100 SF - 1980. The bike runs really well, except for cruising at lower RPM. Like the low end second gear, when you add throttle it hesitates almost seems like its getting flooded. As soon as it gets over 3k it smooths out and no problems. Is this typical for this bike or is there a way to fix it?

Check out the carb tech tips on the left side of the page. Sounds like they need a good cleaning.

      Hey Denysp,

Unlike the V-twins out there, the XS11 isn't a LOW RPM cruiser, especially in the higher gears. The power band starts around 3500 rpm, so if you're trying to run it much below 3K you're lugging it!! Keep the revs a little higher and it'll be much happier and more responsive!

Den, an 1196 kit gives better low down grunt. Bit pricey tho. A cheaper option is to richen the idle circuit or even get some bigger pilot jets. A 80' shouldn't be as fluffy below 3000 as a 78' is. My XS11 cruises smoothly at 1500 in 5th. If you're riding hilly and twisty roads a lot, having nothing below 3000 is a PITA. TC's still right - the REAL grunt kicks in after 3000.
