  • reconstruction about to begin...

'getting a lot of parts from several members here and from eBay - they should all be here by week's end - then the "fun" begins.

    The main problems are:
    1) 'structurally modified' front end ('got 3 sets coming; 'just have to piece something together that works correctly)

    2) mangled mufflers (reluctly going back to 4-into-1 system)

    3) several 'new' dents on gas tank...
'just gonna run it as is until I find time to get the bondo out and paint...

    4) 'prezeled' handlebars
'don't know where the hell to find a new set - they're 7/8"... one inch can be found *anywhere*

'was thinking about 'filming this' for an instuctional video but I just want to get back on the bike at this point...

I'll let you know how things go...
    XSive regards,
    Ron (UncleSpot)

Ron, I have some bars. One set from a Special, and one from a Midnight Special.
Neither are show condition. Both are straight.
Yours for the cost of shipping.
    I am in San Jose.

        Ron;
Take a look at the links on tank repair. There was one using a hot melt glue gun. If that won't help, I have at one time put air pressure to the tank, and tap around the dents with a rubber hammer. about 25psi is all you need, and the dents should come out. You will need to make a "block off" plate for the petcocks, and buy or borrow a plumbers "pipe plug" that they use for pressure testing waste pipes. It's like a big rubber stopper with a wing nut on top. put it in the filler, and tighten it down.
Tap one of the "block off" plates for 1/4" pipe thread, and screw in an air hose fitting.

Anything that can go wrong...it has happened to me. I was popping a dent out that way a few years back. I heard a bang. The mountings on the sides were then too far apart for the rubber mounts. Also, the rear mounting hole alignment was tweaked as the bottom of the tank bulged. Be careful!

i have 2 sets of bars, one is stock buckhorn for the 78E, the other is from JCW. (stock purists look away now!!)
I am running bars from an 82 goldwing, they are really comfortable and fit me way better. I picked them up on ebay for $10. If you (or anyone) wants the old ones they are yours for shipping plus like maybe a dollar if I have to get a box for them.
