  • Fuel Tanks

    Hey Guys,
I read the answer to this somewhere and am unable to find it. Will the XJ tank fit my 80 XS Special, if so does it cary more fuel? Further, will the 80 standard tank fit an 80 special?
    Thanks

The XJ's tank will sorta fit, it's longer, and the mounting slot is different than the Special, and it will sit atop the bolt hole where the SPecial bolts to, you'll need to make a bracket with a lip or something to catch the end of the XJ tank, and probably cut of 1/2 of the mounting lip to allow the tab for the seat to be able to slide under it into it's securing slot! I'll be doing this same conversion to my 81SH in the future!!! They also state that the fork tubes may contact the more pronounced bulge of the front of the tank IF you turn the bars fully left or right, however mine don't seem to touch, but my fork mounted brackets for my running lights are contacting my LED side marking lights where my reflectors were, so I don't turn the bars that far anyways, so I don't think it would be problem aside from NOT turning the bars that far....like parking!? The XJ is supposed to be larger capacity than the Special!

The Standard tank will bolt right on IIRC, but you'll need to use the Standard petcocks....and NOT the Octopus if you have one!

I put a Standard tank on my 80 Special last year.
It did bolt on, but it is a little bit longer than was the stock tank.
The Standard tank has a nipple, to drain-off any water or gas that might collect on the filler area.
This will need to be cut off, or it will damage the front of your seat.
Even with this nipple removed, I found that I can not properly attach the front of the seat. It seams to be stable enough with just the two rear bolts though.
Also, the frame reflecters will have to be removed from the down tubes.

It is nice though, having the extra fuel capacity while traveling.

TC, I once had a flexifaring 3 that had mounting brackets on the lowers which could contact the front of the tank. If you jbweld a nut on each side of the turn stop, near the triple tree, you might solve the problem. Sooner or later the bars will turn to full swing all on their own!

          Thanks Guys,
Once again timely responses... I will start looking for the tanks then and go from there.
