  • Chain drive conversion

Does anyone have any ifno on how this is done. What parts are needed. Do you have to get another type of bike for the parts or can you goto Yamaha and get them off the shelf?

I really like this engine. I have the turbo for it as well. I'm wanting to keep this motor, but the shaft has to go.

This engine will do very well for my mini-dune buggy, this is what it looks like, just a different color.

Its designed to have a 600 to 1200cc motorcycle engine.

So like I said I really need to find out about this conversion. There seemed to be a guy that use to do it. But for some reason wants nothing to do with them anymore, nor will he be helpful in letting people know what it takes to do it. (What a shame!)

ANy help would be great, thank you.

I have no idea what was involved in his conversion, but there aren't any off the shelf parts from Yamaha, or several folks here would have done it by now.

Looks like you will need to take the middle gear section off and take it to a machine shop, perhaps they could devise a way of mounting a sprocket shaft onto the end of the shaft that already exists, of course you still need to figure a way of putting a seal instead of that chromed end cap to allow the shaft to come out there for a sprocket. You'd also want to remove the other gear/shaft that goes to the drive shaft. Good luck, keep up posted if you are successful!

      Chain Drive

I am the guy you are talking about I converted a 79 xs11 to chain & raced it here in Australia - I lost interest because as soon as $$ were mentioned on the xs11 list some of the people who said they wanted a conversion started to go behind my back and try & organise their own ( they were not succesful ). As I said on the list I need your middle drive assy complete & L/H engine cover which has to be shipped to Australia for welding & maching - you get back a unit ready to bolt on for $1500.00 Australian . + the cost of freight back to wherever you are.
I have done another four here in Australia since then but have no drive assys to make change over units.
I tried to get some thru members of the old list but as long as you are not in Canada or the US most did not want to know or help for some reason.

I have a blown motor that was converted to a side drive instead of rear, must have been in a legends car or something. Does not have a sprocket, just the original flange. Will tear it down sometime and see what they did.

I will post a picture tonight.
