fin spacers

Anybody have any of those rubber spacer things that fit between the fins on the engine? Don't seem to be available from Yamaha
and I've never seen them anywhere.

Also. when you remove those brass plugs on the carbs do people cap off the holes with anything?

I am missing a few also. What is the purpose of these spacers?

The spacers are there to dampen the harmonic vibrations of the fins. Some engines can generate an audible "ringing" tone that the rubber isolators can silence. Otherwise, they are not necessary to operate the engine. They are used to help the engines meet EPA noise regulations.

You could cap off the pilot screws if you want to, but it is not necessary. It will just serve to keep dirt and other yuk out of there.

I have used heavy walled fuel line tubing as a replacement for the rubber dampeners. It was goodyear 3/16" fuel/emissions tubing for the ones I replaced. Cut the tubing longer than the distances between the fins that are missing the rubber dampeners, using pliers to insert and line them up with the rest of the rubber dampeners. I guess you could use other dimension tubing to match the dampener sizes that are missing.

Old black spark plug wire works well since it's more solid than fuel line.
They also help with breakage of fins. If one get whomped then the spacer transfers some of the blow to others so it doesn't break. My freind took his out and feels that is why he broke a fin.
