  • dangerous driver nearly makes XJ1100 endangered species

Good crap there's some idiots out there! Last night I was taking a nice spin and I found it's true what they say about the most dangerous place is close to home.. I was taking a left turn onto my street and as usual, I took that "last life saving look" behind me and all looked clear for the turn (although there was someone behind). So with the signal on and slowing in first gear I began my turn and ZOOM, this moron came cruising by me within a foot of my right hand side (he passed on the shoulder of a shoulderless road). If I would have had to swerve to miss loose gravel or something I'd have been a dead man. This is the second time something like this has happened. The other time I was turning right and the guy passed in the same lane almost forcing me to the inside of the lane and shoulder.....

What is it with people and motorcycles! I just don't get it. I know there's two lessons I've learned. You know how sometimes as you approach a turn you might make a slight turn out so your turn is more square... Be very careful. I know I'm probably preaching to the choir but hey, I don't want any of these bikes to be lost (let alone their riders) to some friggin idiot who can't figure that the same laws apply to bikes and cars.

About a month ago on my way home from work I wittnessed a near crash on a rural highway. I was in my car and 2nd behind a line of cars stopped for someone making a left turn. Eventually the oncoming traffic stopped for someone taking a left turn in their lane as well. As both cars started their turn, I saw out of my mirror a huge 4x4 come flying up the shoulder to pass. It was so close I reacted by closing my eyes and covering my head... The moron in the truck nearly got what he deserved and went off the road and into the ditch to avoid a crash (he must have been doing 50). Unfortunately, he recovered and just kept on cruising. I just think if that were someone on a bike turning - it would be so hard to see someone coming up the shoulder behind a long line of stopped cars.

Anyway, I don't mean to get all preachy but guys, be careful out there... Other drivers are out to make us endagered species.

All this and I'm heading out to take my motorcycle endorsement road test this morning. If I make it there.

Welcome to the club. Now get one...(a club that is)...and keep it on your bike for self defense.

I get the feeling you've not ridden a lot...or your just got back into it recently. What you're describing is something that bikers put up with everyday. I think some cage riders simply have utter contempt for us free spirited types.

    My attitude while riding is:

Imagine EVERY cage (car) on the street is trying to run over you with malice in their heart. That's right! If you ride like every single car is INTENTIONALLY trying to kill you...like it's a video game and you're the target...then you might...just might...make it years before some idiot actually does.

    Be careful...be paranoid.

      I Agree.

Remember, just because your paranoid doesn't mean that they're not after you!

        somebody's watching me....

        Nice...

I've only ridden for a year now and haven't seen too many moronic moves (other than from myself of course)

It's a junge out there... I like the cage analogy. You ever put a wild animal in a cage.... They DO want to kill you for it.

It isn't just motorcycles they are after. People can't freakin' drive today. I remember seeing on the news a few years ago that the insurance companies had gathered accident data and determined that with airbags and seatbelts, drivers felt that they were better protected and took greater risks as a result. Accident rates went up when airbags and seatbelt use became mandatory.

I had a close call in the car yesterday from some bozo in a pickup blowing through a stop sign. He was turning right as I was approaching the intersection from his right. Had I arrived at the intersection 1 second earlier the truck would have been in the seat with me. I had to swerve to the shoulder to avoid the idiot as it was. This was in a school zone with a 15mph limit, and he was going so fast that he ran off onto the shoulder on the *left* side of the road while making a right turn. Reminded me of a bumper sticker I saw once..."Drive like Hell. Get there faster".

"I wouldn't be so paranoid if everyone wasn't out to get me..."

Every biker I've ever spoken to has tales of almost-accidents and outright criminal behaviour from car drivers. Worst thing to look out for: soccer moms with kids in mini-vans. 2nd worst: people using cell phones. (IMHO)

There are many good articles about driving defensively for motorcyclist, so I won't list the various points here, except to say you never assume anything, never relax at intersections (most accidents happen there) and never assume a cager has/will see you, even if he/she looks right in your face.

            Be careful out there!

Yep best thing i learned on my test was GET EYE CONTACT with

anyone pulling out from a junction ,be aware at all times and if behind any cage or lorry etc make sure you can see his mirror so he can also see you!!

like the others say ride like theyre out to get you ,theres no surprises then

I agree with all comments (Maximan, Jerry, Gaffer); to stay alive on 2 wheels you MUST be defensive. With 40 years under my belt, I’ve had lots of close calls (like most of us). It has gotten worse as drivers are more aggressive, stupider, less attentive, and often impaired.

I also drive assuming that every driver is DELIBERATLEY trying to get me, and I drive accordingly. And, even if they make eye contact, doesn't mean they REALLY see you. I have seen drivers, stopped at a stop sign, look right in my eyes as I approach the intersection, and still pull out -“Like deer in a headlight”. So drive with “two fingers on the brake lever” at all times, and be prepared to use it.

I also drive with the idea that there is an oil slick in the road, just around the corner. If I get though the apex and can’t see the oil, then I’ll accelerate out of it.

And my worst fear is of being rear ended at an intersection, by some nitwit who just drop his/her cell phone, e.g. I always look in my mirror well before making a left turn at an intersection. If I see cars coming behind me, I always judge my speed to beat oncoming traffic, so I don’t have to stop. If I can’t, I will often keep going past my turn, and make a U-turn later, rather that sit in the lane, dead stopped at the intersection, and let some idiot barrel into me.

Remember - sensible speed, and DEFENSE!!!

The reason people drive so stupid is because the cars are too safe anymore.
Airbags, crumple zones, reinforced doors, etc. all make for a safer car so the occupant has less to lose.
The answer is spikes..... on the inside of all cars. 2 foot long spikes, and all seatbelts will be removed. Haveing an 18" stiletto shoot out from the steering column into the drivers chest if they impact anything should make the driver put down the cell phone.
They have nothing to lose, we do.

                    That's usually good advice. HOWEVER>>>

I've actually had morons pull out in front of me at an intersection while they looked directly at me...AND STILL DID IT!!

When I shook my head in dis-belief as I skid my bike to a halt...one of the idiots (idiot being someone whom is only aware of himself ...id) shrugged like "Whadid I do?".

The safest place by far to ride is on controlled access, read Interstate ...and even then...oh well.

                      I think Jerry nailed it.

                      CELL PHONES!!!

And what is it with cell phones. People can't drive and talk at the same time? I mean they drive and talk to whomever is in the car with them. What is soooo difficult about paying attention while your talking "to a phone".

Of course now with the plethora of extra-cirricular distractions in a cage...(18 inch woofers with 1200 watt amps....DVD players...satellite uplinks to the internet....shall I continue)...driving has become a secondary issue...a mere nusance to what's really going on in the car.

I assume that ALL cage drivers are STUPID until they prove other wise. I never ride in the blind spot, and ALWAYS aim my headlight into their mirror, so they know that I am behind them. I had a decal made for the back of my helmet that says "Hang Up and Drive!"I have one on the back window of my car also. The car also has a sign that says "Got Phone? Brakes? Insurance?"When I see someone yakkin' on a phone, and I'm in the car, I will get in front of them and deliberatly light up the brake lights. I love the look of terror on their faces when they see brake lights. Just a few days ago I was riding home from work, when at the merge of two MAJOR freeways I saw some F'n idiot reading a spread sheet that he had on the steering wheel. Traffic was quite heavy. I was right alongside him and his window was down. Hmmm, I thought...these car horns on my bike are loud enough to scare the chit outta him...should I do it? Well after a little thought, I decided against that. He could be startled, and swerve right into me. Instead I just yelled at him to "pay attention to his driving". What did he do? He flipped me off! I told him "F*** YOU! Why don't you put that book down, you stupid F***." Well he must have gotten scared, because he merged in to traffic, and started to fall way back. He never did catch up to me, although I was looking for him.
I wish I had my fanny pack on, and it was full of rocks. He would need a new windshield. And how about the Mom that's putting on her make up at the same time she's feeding a kid in the car seat? Scary!!!

                          Hey Tab/Tom,

Welcome to the group! I had a close encounter of the 3rd kind over a decade ago when some dipstick lady coming my way on a 2 lane road, no turn signal, looks up and make eye contact....so I don't bother to tap the horn...had my headlight on! Then she quickly slows down and then cuts right in front of me.....hit the brakes hard, lots of gravel on the shoulder so couldn't do a swerve move, was slowing down and she was going thru the turn....thought I was going to miss her, UNTIL my back tire squeeled, she STOPPED, I plowed right into her right front fender/hood, flew across her hood, and smashed into her windshield and then bounced off onto the ground! Trashed my forks, handlebar windshield, fender, mirror, thankfully I got away with just a deep bruise in my thigh!

I now flash my 2 55 watt Aux. Lights when approaching intersections, and don't hesitate to use my horn!! Stay safe out there! T.C.

... i like the bumper sticker that says "i wonder if you could drive any better with that cell phone sticking out of your butt!"
.. also that eye to eye thing really doesnt work, but the eye to 38 does... even better with tailgaters on the interstate... but watch out for that one, now that everyone has a cell phone the cops could be waiting down the road for that mad biker gunman, but thats another story/learning experence
