  • Retro Fitting 2005 American Light to 80 XS!?!

Anyone ever tried or know of initial pit falls of installing a 2003-5 headlight onto a 1980XS?

What problems can I expect going forward? Do I need an updated fuse box? Is this even possible?

Ne to bike mechanics so use little words, thanks

    Can you be more....

what are you asking, has anyone installed a 2003-2005 headlight on an XS?..

    which headlight?

    a circle/square?

    projector?

    harley style?

No these arent on XS's, but im sure that they could EASILY be modified to fit, (most things either will fit in the 7" XS bowl for roudn headlights) and then others will come with small tabs you can weld onto brackets to hold on the front forks... or... rear's.. be unique.. lol..

i plan on doing the dual 4" round headlights with H4 bulbs

Just make sure that the charging system will be suitable for the demand!

yeah.. a better battery will probably be in my future.. then again, if i go dual HID.. it will be using about the same power as the OEM headlight will..

            Hey Chaluska,

I just did a bit of research on TRUE HID systems, very interesting. Yes, they do draw slightly less amps than 55watt halogens ONCE they are burning, but they take 12amps per bulb to get them started, having to crank up the ballast to generate those 25Kvolts...YES, 25,000 volts but then backs down to only a few hundred to keep them lit. So along with the special bulbs and housing...BTW, they only have low beam, unless you have a second light aimed for position of high beam, and you also have to have a place to mount the ballasts....AWAY FROM HIGH HEAT SOURCES, and usually has only 3 feet of wire to the bulbs that can't be cut, spliced or lengthened!

Well, duh, just reviewed the previous photos again, the dual bulb type setup is another newer option, but these are not cheap!!

So....let us know how you get it worked out!!

Even though it uses 12 volts, it uses a step up transformer (similar to our ignition system) to jump 12 volts, to 25,000 volts.. as far as wattage is concerned, it uses only 35W (hid), while the OEM headlight uses 55/60W bulbs. (halogen)...

as i said, its just a few things i have tingling in my head.. im a light freak.
