I've beeen working on a 79 XS1100F, for some time now. Irebuilt the carbs, including replacement of one of damaged diaphram silde. I finally got it running. When I first start it it will idle, but a little rough. When i give it throttle and release it it will idle way high (around 3000-3800 RPM for several minutes before finally settling down to an idle of 900-1000. If I shut it down while it is idling high and start it back up it will start at the lower idle. The linkage and cable are not haning up. Anyone have any suggestions on troubleshooting this problem. Any help/guidance will be greatly apreciated. Thanks

Check your plugs for color, or lack of color. I think it may be running too lean.Bill Murrin

Re: Carb Problem?
1st, synch the carbs at or near idle. Then, check it again. If it does the same thing, it could be that one of the slides is sticking in the up position or maybe the main needle is cruddy. Once you get things pretty close and it does hold an idle, let the head pipes cool off a bit, then restart and see if you have a cooler head pipe while holding idle at 1100 rpms. Be sure and wet your finger and be quick if you do this, or use a spray bottle. This can tell you something about mixture at idle (if your plugs aren't fouled). Shut it down, pull plug from the suspect carb's cylinder and see if it is wet or white. Once you start tweeking it, start with fresh clean plugs to check color. I would let it idle for 10 or so minutes with a box fan aimed at it to color the plugs.
