Question of grinding rotors flat has come up before. Refer to this thread:

    http://www.xs11.com/forum/showthread...t=brake+rotors

Use the search function (tab at the top of the page) and use rotors as the search term You will find quite a number of past conversations on care and replacment of rotors and other brake issues.

ZAT true John? If I squeeze the front brake alone, only one side is grabbing? I have noticed squeezing my front brake by itself doesn't come close to the stopping power of doing the same on a friend's honda. But when I mash the footbrake, she stops right now.

        Linked brakes

Michael, I don't remember...what year is your MNS? I believe that in 81 Yamaha gave the MNS the same linked brakes that appeared on the XJ in 82. If you look at the rear master cylinder, do you see a steel brake line running up the frame tube and leading to the front of the bike? I saw some 81MNS pieces on ebay a while ago, and while they were listed as such, the looked more like parts from an XJ. I wrote the seller and told him that they were from an XJ, and he had checked into it, and they were definitly from an 81MNS. Do you have the curved spoke wheels also?

I know that mine are linked, because I took the whole works apart as only one side was grabbing on the front brakes. We could NOT get that other side to grab, then we touched the back brake....!!!! I just never knew that it was supposed to work with only one side grabbing with front brake only applied. If I had known earlier that would have saved me some work! And yes, I have the curved spoke wheels too (but they ARE gold, as a MNS should be!).

                  STOPPING POWER

MY 82 XJ BACK ROTOR HAD BAD GROOVES FROM BAD BRAKES FROM PO. I TOOK IT OFF AND TOOK IT TO A MACHINE SHOP AND TOLD THEM TO SURFACE GRIND IT SMOOTH. I DID NOT KNOW SPECS SO JUST TOLD THEM TO TAKE OUT GROOVES. IT WAS ONLY BAD ON THE OUTSIDE SO THEY ONLY DID ONE SIDE. IT WORKS GOOD. DID NOT MEASURE AFTER DONE.
                  Thanks Tom
