  • Another Ig. Coil Replacement Option!

    Hey Folks,

Been shopping and comparing stuff on MikesXS, and found an interesting item. In the 80-84 model 650's, they went to the TCI style ignition, and so the replacement coils for them are dual posts....waste spark style, and have same Ohms as the 81-82 series XS11/XJ11. The mounting holes are 90 degrees off from how the XS11 mounts vs. the location of the high tension outputs, but they are a darn sight CHEAPER ($28.00 ea!)than the Accel or Dyna aftermarkets, don't need a ballast resistor....so with the 78-80's, just bypass the resistor. Here's a model # and picture: Part #17-6803

High Output Replacement Ignition Coil - for 80-84 XS650’s with Factory TCi ignition (dual lead - 1 used per bike ). Used on 80-84 models Only, and is Not for contact point systems. Mounts to stock brackets. Plug Wires not included. Not for use with Boyer Ignitions. Mount this coil to stock bracket on opposite side and with high tension plug wires facing to front of bike ( Red/White wire from stock harness goes to + terminal on coil).
That was the description text from Mike'sXS. Ours mount with the leads to the rear.
Just add leads and plug caps, and they should be fairly plug and play! Just an FYI...and possible future tech tip/link!

    Hi TC
Are you gonna use em? I'm not clear if we would eliminate our ballast resistor or not. And they would mount ok?

      Hey Dean,

Unless the ones on "Teacher" are bad, I hadn't planned on using them any time soon, but wouldn't hesitate to get them if I did need them. As I said, the mounting holes are going in the wrong direction..up and down, instead of sideways, so some adaption would be required to get them to mount, to allow room for the output posts, but I really think they would work fine. And, if the bike has a ballast resistor....then yes it would need to be bypassed, these coils are rated at 2.5 ohms and are designed for 12 volt system. The early OEM coils are only rated at 1.5 ohms, and and resistor adds another 1.5 ohms, pulling it down to around 9 volts mostly to keep from burning up the OEM coils!

I've yet to test the "Teacher's" coils and plug caps. Just glad to have found a cheaper alternative to the $70+ ones from Bike Bandit, or the $163.00 set of Accel from D.K.

            Warning about wiring in coils!

Here's a quote from Xsive Panshovel regarding a little trouble he had with these replacement coils, an FYI!
            ignition coils
Please tell everyone not to solder the primary wires on, I did and lost my secondary side (primary 2.5omhs, secondary open) Mikes replied:
"Heat from soldering probably damaged coil as connections are not solder on. We have had no trouble with those.

Followup message: PanShovel went ahead and tried the coils, even though he wasn't able to get any Ohm readings from the secondaries after he had soldered the connectors to the coils, and they WORKED! He's not sure why they work, he thought he had fried them internally while soldering them. Was able to get an ohm reading on the primaries, but not from the secondaries. Some others have gotten and used these coils without problems!

.. panshovel's multi meter might be the fault ,i have one that acts like that too
.. TC what size/ type/ resistance plug wires do you suggest we use with these coils? or would it matter?
btw, good find on the coils

If you install Accel 1403's for a TCI you can loose the ballast resistor. Plug wires are 8.8mm. They are pricey at $200.00 bucks. I know some people who did a comparison between the Accel's and the stock XS1100 OEM. The Yamaha jumped the greatest gap on the machine. I know of a Kawasaki who put 1404's made for a CDI on his TCI and it fried the Igniter.

                    Hey there GNEPIG,

MikesXS sells ignition wire sets, solid copper core, black silicone rubber casing, $4.00 a pair, but it doesn't state the size, I would assume it was 7mm!?
