    Excess, if your bike's currently running rich(ish) the K&N will give a kick alright. A screaming leaned out top end kicks out extra horsepower for sure. If your bike's a bit lean already, performance might even drop. Bung in some bigger jets though and you're gonna feel a difference in the midrange. If the owner isn't riding their bike very often then it wont matter because the top end should be pretty good without worrying about low and midrange. If you're riding a lot then the low and midrange is the more important.

      I have been running that style of K&N filter for 23 plus years on my 79 SF. When I had the stock exhaust system I went from 137.5s to 140s on the mains, but went up to 145s when I replaced the stock exhaust system with a 4 into 1 Winning Preformance Header. Bike pulls strong through all gears with no flat spots or hesitation and needle setting is stock with clip set in middle slot.

        k&n filter.

        wouldnt your jetting come- in if you were rich to begin with. K&n would allow more air volume thus tending to lean it out? maybe raise the needles 1 incremant. Most of city driving is in the 1/4 to 1/2 throttle openning for any duration of time, this is where the needles are working.

          I have two bikes with Jardine 4-1's and K&N washables in the air boxes. One is a 78E, the other is essentially an 80G (81H frame and ignition) because of the head replacement. Both have older style carbs. The 78 has SMALLER mains and the other has BIGGER mains. Both have oem pilots and both are set at the middle of the main needles. The 78E's Jardine's are about 5 years or so older than the "80G" but the look similar, but sound a little different. The newer pipes are a slightly higher pictch sound. The throttle response from the older pipes are better in the low range.
