Hello all,
I sold one of my xs's about 2 months ago and the guy called tonight with a problem.....
Here is how he described it....
He was down shifting to make a turn and the the shift lever fell untill it hit the exhaust. He said he stopped and was able to get it into neutral once, now he is unable to. he says the clutch is working fine. (i rebuilt it last summer) the bike has about 38,000 miles on it. he says the shift lever with the bike turned off is about 1" lower than normal. Also no funny noises in the transmission. He rode it for a 1/2 mile.
I'm Going down there this weekend to have a look . Where should i start.
He also pulled the shift lever off and it did not look like it was stripped.
Any info would be app.

hi chris, it sounds like the gear shift linkage/pawl teeth shifted/popped out of engagement. i would take the gear shifter off and the gear shift side cover off (tip the bike towards the right side so you dont loose any oil). note the dot on gear of teeth, they should mesh together. check to see if cir-clip shifted location on groove in shaft or is missing, causing shaft to shift side to side. rtv will seal things back up. this may not be the problem , but this is where i would start.

PS, the diagram of the spring in the above picture is very misleading. The wire ends DO NOT CROSS when properly in position, they are spread apart to straddle the shaft(#11) below where the spring fits. The diagram shows the spring UNSPRUNG!
