    I measured valve clearances and they are way below spec. Going to have a mechanic friend who has the shims and tool do the adjustment. He says that to do it right you also have to synch the carbs. Is this correct? He also has the tool for that.

    When you make adjustments to the valves you should re-synch the carbs. Changing the intake gap does have some impact in the air passing throught the carbs. Maybe there is no big change, but don't you want to know that?

      Hey Dean, be aware (if you aren't already) that there is a supplement to the clymers manual for the later models. The intakes spec for your bike is smaller than for the 78's!
