The trip meter on my 1980 SG spins randomly. The rest of the speedo works fine. Is there a fix other than replace?

I also was having my trip meter moving on me during trips. My clutch cable was the cause the trip wheel to change the mileage. It would happen sometimes when turning or breaking hard the cable would brush up against the trip knob and turn it. I made a cable guide to keep the clutch cable away from the trip knob and that took care of the problem.
I have also had the mileage wheels come off of its bracket inside the speedo, and to fix that problem I had to remove the top cover to allow the removal of the speedo guts to fix that problem.
