  • Just purchased a rough but worthy 80 xs1100

Hello, found this xs1100 sitting in a parking lot behind an old appt building, damn near broke my heart to see it like that. The owner told me it sat two winters outside. no cover. IT NOW IS TOASTY IN MY GARAGE. You wont believe this, I drained the old oil (full of gas), cleaned the plugs, put in new gas, hooked it up to my truck and she fired. Didnt run well, but it proved itself worthy. So its second life begins. I dismantled the air box so I could work the carbs which were spraying gas. Wow fuel everywhere but the cylinders. Im still waiting for my manual, can any of you guys give me a little insight as to the first few steps in carb cleaning.-rebuilding. I have the rack of carbs off the engine, and float boles off. They look clean, a bit of crud but ok. Hey any info would be great!! Looks like a great site, thanks for havin me aboard. Mike

Absolutely! Just did the same thing myself. From the home page on this site, go to the tech tips. READ THEM ALL!! Lots of helpful info there. A great step by step for carb teardown and rebuild. If you have other questions, just post here and there are lots of very helpful people. Welcome the XS'ers.

I recommend getting carb kits first. They,ll have new gaskets...float valves...etc.

Don't take the carbs off the rail. More than likely you won't have to "re-sync" them.

To clean out every passage/circuit...use guitar wire and compressed air with berryman's carb cleaner. But don't get carb cleaner on the slide diaphrams.

Be careful not to break a float post. But if you do it can easily be re-built with epoxy (JB Weld, MAgnum steel, etc)

Can't think of anything else right off the top of my head.
