Newbie Question

I just purchased an '82 XJ1100, and would like to replace the ignition. Where is the most cost effective place to purchase one?

I'm loving this board. There is a wealth of info here. Looking forward to perusing.

Regrettably, the XJ1100 was only made for 1 year in the US, and so parts are much more difficult to come by. The Igniter unit is NO LONGER AVAILABLE from Yamaha, Bike Bandit, etc., so you have to find a used one. There's one on Ebay right now, but a bidding war is going on, up to over $200.00 now!! Are you sure your's is not working?? Randy, our resident electrical guru might be able to check it out for you. Due to some fancier internal electrical components which replaced both the mechanical vacuum advance/retard unit along with the centrifugal advance unit, it's not possible to repair them IF those have gone bad. But many times, it can be bad/broken/cold solder joints that have worked loose that can be resoldered to get it back into working order!?

Tell us more about what's wrong with your bike and why you suspect the TCI unit! Can't get it started, or no spark, or spark only on 2 cylinders, 1 or more exhaust pipes cold, blackened fouled spark plug, etc.!? Sometimes what seems like electrical can actually be FUEL, or even Mechanical! Hope this helps.

BTW, the part your looking for has a 10M-### as the beginning designator for the TCI, you don't/can't use any other year, like the 2H7 or the 4RO units!!

If it's the ignition switch I have one minus a key. You can get a key cut at just about any competent locksmith. I do have ALL of the rest of the electrical components from an XJ I havn't listed on Ebay yet. I havn't tested all of the parts but I can say is that the TCI box would not work on my SF. Different part number and would not start. Send me a pm of the parts you need and I give you a decent deal.
