  • Another Carb Question

    Greetings again,
I have been searching for a set of carbs for my '79 xs eleven special that won't break the bank.
Anyone having a set that they want to sell please, PLEASE contact me.

Question: Will the carbs off of an '81 xs 1100 fit on my bike??

    Any help would be appreciated.

Mine starts OK, I know that I have some air screw issues, seems #4 cylinder doesn't want to fire until 3500-4000rpm.
In that range the bike runs well, above or below 4000rpm....just sucks....bogs down, backfires etc.....this is not a consistent problem though...seems to get worse as she warms up.
She does have short pipes on her...should the carbs be re-jetted???

    Well that's enough for now!!!

Once again, any help would be appreciated......

    Hey there Copperhead,

This sounds like the classic clogged pilot circuit which feeds the carb in the idle to low rpms, but if yours isn't flowing, then it can bog, backfire(too lean), etc.!! Instead of putting $$ into a questionable bank of carbs that you will most certainly need to clean anyways....just invest that $$ into the parts needed to THOROUGHLY clean your carbs. New gaskets, rubber seat seals, float needles, etc.!? Just trying to adjust the pilot screws won't do any good if that circuit is clogged!!

If your pipes are not OEM, then they are most probably flowing better than before, and a rejetting MAY be in order, depending on your plugs, but you need to get your carbs clean and running right first, then follow the tech tips for throttle chop check of plugs. You can richen things in the earlier models by raising the floats, raising the vacuum slide needles, turning out the pilot screws.....so rejetting may not be required.

Clean them!! Check the inlet screens, check the vacuum slides for pinholes in the rubber diaphragm, etc.!!

      Hi Copperhead,

Do as T.C. suggests and clean those ernicher jets. I had the same problem with mine, and it was "diagnosed" to me by another XS carb expert, Ken Talbot.

Go to this thread for more information

      http://www.xs11.com/forum/showthrea...48512#post48512

After following Ken’s expert advice, I removed all four float bowls, and cleaned those jets. I had to use a needle and lots of carb cleaner, but I finally got fluid squirting through all four of the circuits.

Ran like a champ after that!
