  • Float height question

I have read and re-read Ken Talbot's tech tip regarding checking and adjusting float height.
I attended a carb clinic with a bunch of guys from the XJ owners Group, where we used a similar rack as described by Ken.

On my 80 Special, I am not seeing the drain nipple to attach the clear lines to, in order to check "actual" fluid height within the bowl.

Has anyone devised a special set of screws to replace the drain bolts, in order to attach these clear lines?

Did Yamaha offer that type of bowl just on the XJ?
Will XJ1100 carb bowls fit on the XS1100?

    Am I missing something?
Do I sound like a blubbering idiot?? LOL

I think that checking the float height in the way you described is an unessary procedure,as long as you are acurate when adjusting the float height while the carbs are apart. That is my opinion,I have been rebuilding carbs for about 15 years and have not used that procedure and have never had a problem. I think you will be fine if you just skip the float check. Alot of other people will probally agree,Good luck!

Having done it that way, I would also agree that it really doesn't tell you much. You will get a fairly easy visual check of the level in the various bowls, but that doesn't tell you if it is too high or too low. Also, trying to read the meniscus will not give you the degree of accuracy you will get from using a caliper from the floats to the gasket surface.
