    Hey Brock,

That Spongy thing is actually 4 individual Sponge Cylinder styled pods, they are the UNIFILTER ones that I have on my machine. He went overkill with those extensions, cause the UNIFILTER ones don't have any obstructive lip, they are fully free breathing. I know, I am running them on mine for 4 years, and have no problem running to 8.5K +! Below is not the greatest sized picture, but it's my machine with those filters attached directly to the carbs.

The problem with the tapered shaped pods is not the total diameter of the opening...which is NOT restrictive in itself, it's just the inner mounting lip that extends inward and partially covers the slots around the opening of the carb throat.....NOT the central throat itself.

So...putting on those extensions which don't have any restrictive lip then allows use of the chrome tapered filters with ease!

        Hey Brock,

I would think so, but I remember seeing Ratbyk's reply about how he tried that, but hit a metal inner band that prevented him from being able to cut into it!? IF it's rubber, then I would think a heavy duty scissors, or sharp knife, something that would cut thru the rubber but still allow good control so you can only trim off the excess, but leave the main rim intact would work!!

Let us know what you find!

i don't wanna hurt anybody's feelings, but i'm not too worried about some ****ty metal band. I can get through that with a dremel or a drill or a big damned knife or something.

So I think that's gonna be the first thing i do. I'm gonna open those things up a bit and see if i cant even up the playing field a bit.

the fact that the air has to do some swirly thing isn't a problem?

              Hey Brock,

Well, this IS a family oriented public site and children can have access to it, so that's why "wirty dords" are not permitted! However, I didn't edit/moderate your previous reply, did you actually type the wirty dord, or did you moderate/censor your reply yourself!?

My concern with the metal band would be that it would make it so that the filter would not mount or stay mounted without it! I would think that band would only be in the flat outer zone, but not in the angled lip area!? Have at it!!

That is my bike in the pic. The sponge thing is the filter.
The foam filters are washable unlike the pleated papper filters. They are a little more expensive than the papper but dont wear out since they are washable. They are molded with rubber to hold them on via hose clamp type mounts. The insides have a spring to keep them from deforming and have a chrome end cap.

Yes, the full length is overkill (or is it?) I left them this size to be able to switch back to oiginal air box.
I won't get into airflow theriories here but why do you think Yamaha made them so long.........

The '79 and special and '80 carbs are different. As I stated in my other post these PODs "DID" block my carb inlet holes making the bike stall after 2 block repeatidly. The stacks solved this problem and added performance vs pods only.
