I have a 1978 xs 1100e for some reason #1 and #2 cylinders are not firing. They are getting gas and some spark. I don't know if the spark is that great but the coils run #1 and #3. Could the ignition unit be bad?

You been messin with those wires? One coil fires 1 and 4 and the other fires 2 and 3. Nos. 1 and 2 share the same fuel line, so you might want to check it closely. Route a spare hose from the petcock to a container and suck on the vacuum line to open up the valve of the petcock and check for ample flow. If you have an inline filter, it could be plugged. If your tank is full of gunk, your filter tower on the petcock could be blocked...
