HELLO ALL..... I need some assistance......last week I bought a 1980XS1100 special....and wow....im in love. It definiteley needs some tlc but she does run. and for the most part she runs good however i have a problem....while im riding sometimes it seems to bog down real bad and it sounds like im under water for lack of a better description. If i pull the clutch and let it idle down the exhaust pops and then i can give it hell again and then its fine. i was told that there may be dirt or rust in the tank which is making it do this but i havent had it long enough to pull the tank. just wandering if anyone else has ever had this problem.

Thanks to anyone who can help.

    Greg

p.s. i think i got a really good deal.....$1200 bucks for 2 XS1100 specials.....one is in riding condition other than some cosmetic things and the tank problem. and the other one just hasnt been running in a couple of years. but i was told that it does run.

It sounds like your pick-up coil wires are giving out. When it comes down in rpms, the pickups rotate with the change in vacuum and the frail wires start making better contact. They are repairable. Look through the tech tips and archives...

Ditto on skids suggestion. I would definitely start there. If that is all that is wrong, you got a good deal. Kinda like 2 for 1.

I agree. That's exactlly what MIYAMI did before the pickup coil fix.

I agree on the pickup wires.

            Couple other things to check:

Make sure the cap is venting too (specials don't have a vent tube). If the cap is all clogged up, a vacuum will build in the tank, causing fuel starvation.

Also check the vacuum line to the octopus. Make sure it is in good condition and goes to the # 2 cylinder boot (any one will do, the point is, it's not hooked up the the vacuum advance port on the #2 carb)

            Good luck!

when my pick ups went, they just went. maybe your running out of fuel to the carbs?
I remember the morning when mine went out, I was trying to start the bike, and it seemed to want to fire up once, but after that all I got was a HUGE backfire and then nothing. I thought my neighbor had fired his black powder rifle
it took awhile before I determined it was the pickups. that was back in '94.

First bike was an: 1978 XS1100
              Second bike is an FJR1300.
              Now I'm restoring a '79 XS1100.
