  • Charging system 1100 Maxim

Ok, Got my Maxim running finally. But now I don't think its charging, or something is up. The headlight is sooo dim, I changed it with one I knew was nice and bright still dull. Did the alternator test, while running disconnecting the battery like I do with cars and it died, so not sure if that goes for bikes or not. Anyways now for the question LOL, how do I test the alternator properly? Thanks in advance everyone!!

I'll admit to knowing nothing about an XJ, but I read that you are not supposed to disconnect the battery leads when the bike is running. Something about electronics damage...

You pretty much did the alternator test by revving the engine and seeing no change with the headlight brightness. Can you hold iron up to the case containing the field coil to see if there is any magnetic field, like an xs11 (with key on/engine running). That field current comes from the volt regulator.

On the XJ, connect a voltmeter to the battery, start engine and at 2000 rpm's you should have 14.5 +- 0.3 volts.

        similar problems last year

I had similar problems last year. First, charge the battery off the bike. Get a wiring diagram. There's a wiring diagram for the XJ somewhere (I believe on this site) which explains the charging system and it's components.

        1) Install freshly charged battery
        2) start the bike... Does the tachometer work. If not - it's probably not charging and usually this indicates an alternator problem.
        3) with the wiring diagram, there are a couple of simple checks you can do on the stator and field coil. I would first check the field coil as it is very simple (this is the rotor inside the alternator). Basically you check for continuity across the coil with a meter which sends a small electrical current through the coil. There's a disc on the face of the rotor and if you look at the contacts you can see that there's two "rings" of contact. If you test for continuity accross this and get a high resistance or open circuit - this is you problem. It was my problem. I found a local shop that could rewind the rotor - otherwise it's fairly expensive for a new one. If this is your problem and you can't find a place to do it let me know...

        4) Ok - the stator check. IF you get this far this get's a little confusing. Do a search for stator check or charging system checks and you should find the description. I'm not an electrical guy so I couldn't try to duplicate this procedure. I'll try to find a thread of mine last year which applies and get it to you. Again, if you need a stator, I have an extra as last year I bought one only to find out it wasn't what was wrong.

Lots of luck - electrical issues can be sneaky.

Try this link. If you look under charging systems, you should find a lot of good info.

Had a similar prob when I first got Zilla. First I check, unplugged and cleaned every electrical connection on that bike...every single one. As I did that I found that the main ground of the bike (connected to the frame) was loose. I tightened that up good. After that proceedure the headlamp became VERY bright.
