  • New Oil leak, or just marking its territory

    Well,
I have either a new oil leak, or this thing is taking after the Harley's parked in the lot at work and marking its territory..

The leak is a consistant drip coming from the area behind the pickup and junk in that cover...

Is that a seal that can easily be changed at some point..?????

Look carefully... oil can find a way that u'd never dream of...

Check the metal oil tube leading from the top of the crankcase to the head of the engine and the area around it...

Also check the gearbox cover... these gaskets and stuff are easy to replace... if it leaks from any of the above, try tightening the bolts, but do not overtighten... if the gearbox cover is sealed with silicone, and that is the source of the drip, u'll have to take it off and seal it again. If it's a gasket (paper or sth), try tightening 1st.
Follow the path of the oil and try determining where the leak is, and where is it leaking to....

Unscrew the pick-up cover and check for oil inside... it may be the crankshaft oil seal or crankcase sealant... usually silicone.
That is some work... u'll have to take the whole engine apart... bout 3-4 days work... Yeah, I know... it sucks...

Try to eliminate easy fixable stuff first.

PS: Noticed a pool of oil under my XS today too... and I haven't even put oil in... looks like front right brake caliper... **** happens.

Also check the screwed in plug under the crank on the bottom of the engine. It can come loose and cause a leak. Wouldn't hurt to remove it completely (yes, you might get some oil leakage) and check the O-ring underneath it.

Neutral safety switch is also a common place to leak.
