  • Self cancelling turn signals HELP PLEASE!!

I've done all the test in the factory manual. All tests checked out ok ( Speedo test at end of harness, reset fingers when left or right and held to one side or the other ). changed the self cancelling unit with one from working xj650. XJ 650 worked in 650 not in xs 1100 and the xs1100 worked in xj 650 not in xs1100.

You may have a problem in your harness. The cancelling sender may be working, but the signal may not be reaching the canceller. Have you performed those tests on the pins at the cancelling unit connector?

didn't change lights. It's the one problem the bike had when I bought it.

Yes I tested at the plug end of the harness on the pins.

P.S. This is a great sight and feel lucky to be part of it.

If I read you right, your self-cancellor is not switching off the blinkers? Note that the switch on the left grip is a "momentary" type switch. If the switch assembly is gunked in there, the slider will just stay in contact and the thing will not turn off. WD40 is a good cleaner for the switch in my opinion. PS, you can lose your self cancelling function with aftermarket blinker units.

Yes it is momentary. I have cleaned the switch with both contact cleaner and WD forty. I'm pretty good as a mechanic used to repair printing presses and do camera repair on the side, so electrical diagrams don't through me but this problem has me puzzled.

OK, there is another gizmo that tells the unit when to switch it off. There is sensor in the speedometer that counts revolutions and sends a signal to the electronic canceller unit that is a black box under the tank (or is it under the seat?).

It's under the seat on the 1100 and under the tank on the xj650.

If I take the sdeedo cable off at the hub and test for pulses at the self canceling end of the harness on the pins it test ok (on and off pulses as I spin the cable).

As I said before Great site But even Better Community of riders I thank all VERY MUCH.

I have a feeling that I'll have to pull the tank and follow the harness conections looking for corrotion just enough to test ok but not function properly.

a good rule when you buy a new used bike [ that i use personally] if the turn signals dont work or if they fail in some strange way TAKE THEM OFF put them on the shelf and let them be someone elses' problem later and just go riding!

                    Ed,

Your signal flasher unit may be bad. It's the last unit in the cancelling system. The speedo send pulses to the canceller, which counts the pulses. When the canceller counts enough pules ( = 1/4 mile I think ) it tells the signal flasher to cut off.

BTW, you can't use any signal flasher and still have the cancelling function. So, maybe your signal flasher was changed? Or maybe it's just bad?

                      Randy,

I've swapped the canceling unit with my 650, it worked there but the 650's didn't work in the 1100.

Thanks for the tip on the flasher, I'll try that next.

Have you checked the reed switch inside the speedo. If this is broken or not connected properly then it won't be registering the movement of the bike and so won't cancel - same as leaving your indicator on when stationary.

                          Randy,

You're a steelly eyed missile man. The flasher HAS been replaced with the WRONG ONE. Now I just have to find one.

Thanks much I NEVER would have looked there.

Just goes to show this bunch is the best.

                            Hey there EZ,

Unless you're willing to pay big bucks, like $70+ from Yamaha, then it'll be a bit tough to find one, at least one that you know is NEW and working. That's why many of us have gone to regular or electronic flashers and just push in the turn signal button to cancel them once we've made our turn, but I'm sure you knew about that!! So....happy hunting for an OEM flasher!

Just found one on ebay for 9.95. Panel with starter relay and flasher figure I'll take a chance for the price. Have had good luck so far for parts for my XJ 650 Maxim
