Side pannel lower cover xj1100

hey there was just looking over the xj tonight when i noticed that the left hand side cover has a small black plastic piece that is the shape of a triangle that is below it acting as a cover of somesort. well i took a look on the other side and noticed that the rear master cylinder is in the same place where the other side had that black plastic cover. am i missing a piece here or was the master cylinder always visible with this bike. thanks

You are not missing a piece. The master cylinder is visable. The left-hand cover hides the battery, which must be removed/inserted from the left side of the bike.
