Sending out feelers for fairing lowers

I'm looking for vetter fairing lowers for my 78 XS. I've got a couple weeks of school left and I want to get a jump on this before I head back. I love the fairing, saddlebags, and trunk on the bike. My only complaint is that I get wet from the knees down when it's raining.

Not all lowers are interchangeable; the Windjammer V series has different mounting holes, and Vetter also made Kawasaki and Honda specialty lowers. You need to verify the type numbers that will fit your model Vetter fairing. Most, but not all, of the lowers on eBay fit Vetters II through IV. The first set I bought was for a Kawasaki, they were type 54 or some such and would not fit my IV.

A little research may save you some grief in the future. Lowers should have a type number decal on them; verify with the seller if the type number is not in the description, or what model 'jammer they came off of.

Lowers are a nice addition for late fall and early spring riding. Since they interfere with my engine-guard mounted footrests I don't use them in summer or on long trips.

Incidently, Vetter sells the mounting kits, but I bought the required expansion nuts (well nuts) and bolts at the local hardware store for a lot less than Vetter is asking for them. In my case I went with ss bolts to prevent corrosion; cost of well nut/bolt was less than $1.00 each, you need 8 I seem to recall.

I looked for type 54 lowers for my Windjammer V and never could find any.

So on a chance I bought a set ot type 53. They are actually for a KZ1000. They bolted up fine but the XJ11 fins were touching. So I trimmed them down with a ban saw. They look like a factory fit now.

IMHO, you should forget about the Vetter fairing lowers .....and instead purchase one of those Vetter Riding outfits.
I had the lowers on and my lower legs baked.....here in Northern Wisconsin where the temperatures aren't exactly balmy.

After I came into possession of the Vetter riding outfit, it was a case of......why didn't I have one of these things years ago.

The vetter riding outfit is more of a rainsuit for cooler temperatures. Its a one piece suit that isn't all that different than a snowmobile suit in design. And, you can ride in the rain for hundreds of miles.

I now own 3 of the Vetter riding outfits. (2 for me, 1 for the ol lady).

They are becoming somewhat harder to find, but occasionally, a new one will pop up on Ebay.
