  • $60 gem tarnished

    Overnight my E got sick.
It was running as good as ever when I parked it for the night, no sign of impending doom.
The next morning I went through the usual ritual for starting:
    - turn key on...
    - full choke...
    - starter button...
    - bike starts instantly everytime, without fail...
    - put on helmet and gloves...
    - push choke ½ way in...
    - ride bike 2-3 blocks and push choke all the way in...
This has been the routine every ride, every day, rain or shine, mornings below freezing to summer cool mornings.

Last week it changed. Pushed the starter button and the bike cranked and cranked. It will now start but only with the choke in and with 20 seconds of cranking. It also has a slight loss of power and it won't decellerate (no engine braking).
It did have a small gass puddle under it a week prior to this happening. Removing the airbox cover revealed #4 dripping gas (no gasoil). Rapping on the floatbowl with the handle of a screwdriver stopped the drip.
I have since removed the carbs and found nothing blocking the floats (cleaned the needle and seats and screens anyway). Still no fuel leak but bike still dosen't want to start and dosen't run right.
Guess I will re-sync the carbs and do a compression check (I'll look at the plug color too).
Strange that this happened without warning overnight. I did check for a potato in the exhaust as the drug dealer neighbors are tired of me openly logging the license number of all their 5 minute visitors.
I was thinking the $60 gem is jealous of the Black Widow but the Gem is still ridden much more.

    Hey Pat,

Starting only with the choke pushed in sounds like it's still got a stuck float, causing an overly rich condition, and it takes the 20 seconds to clear out the flood enough to equalize the cylinders before it'll light up!

I can't imagine it going out of synch that badly that quickly to be a cause! Did you replace that spark plug, or just clean it? Did you check the float for leaks? Yeah, a compression check sounds good, to ensure you didn't drop a ring! And your positive no GASOIL!?!?

Good luck, you'll have that tarnish polished in no time!!

Pat, check your oil level! With internal fuel leak you may also have diluted oil.
Lots of luck. $60. Gem has been a good one for you.

I agree, I think that it sounds like you have flooded one or more of your carbs. The 20 sec gives it time to clear. I cleaned my carbs, put new needle float valves and seats in, blew it all out with air and I have not had any problems since. I also rebuilt my petcocks.

I have in-line shut off's in place b/c I really don't trust the system that is in place. The symptoms that you were describing were exactly what I was seeing on my bike.
