  • clutch slipping in second

Was riding the other day getting on it pretty hard coming away from a stoplight and it seems like as I shift into second, the clutch slips a bit. Then it happened again today so I'm sure it's not something that I'm doing differently.

Is this maybe just a adjustment or is my clutch getting bad?

Make sure there is just a little free play in the clutch handle for the cable.

Adjust the clutch setting under the right cover, it is relatively easy. If that adjustment is too tight (clockwise), it can slip. Too loose (counterclockwise) and it will drag when the clutch lever is pulled.

Also make sure you aren't running oil with friction modifers (Energy Conserving label on oil container).

Tom, I agree about checking clutch adjustment under cover and at clutch lever but.....while you have the cover off, disconnect the clutch cable from the lever inside the cover and make sure it operates freely. Mine did the same thing and found the cable corroded enough to work but worked real slow forcing the clutch to engage slowly and/or not completely.
Did not catch this the first time mine started acting just as yours.
Only happened when I got on it good shifting through the gears fast.
        Lubricate or replace cable.

          Hey Tabb,

IF it's only "slipping" in 2nd, but not in the higher gears, then I doubt that it's actually slipping, but that you may be experiencing the dreaded 2nd gear jump symptom. IF it feels like it "slips" out of gear and then back into gear, and not just that the RPM's are rising without the bike speeding up, then it's the 2nd gear jump problem, not the clutch slipping!?

It doesn't feel likes it's jumping out of gear or back into gear - just slipping... The RPMS rise without the power being applied to the rear wheel.

I'll have to try the adjustments I guess.

              going with TC

i hate to say but i'm with TC on this one. Chance are very good to slip in higher gears as opposed to second gear.Keep us informed.
