  • burning oil - Risolone treatment

I had posted a week or so ago about my XJ burning oil on start up after taking it out for the first or second time this spring. Well, the problem aint going away, and it's smoking pretty good. Basically, it smokes for the first 10-15 minutes of riding.

I'm wondering if maybe something in the top end of engine is leaking oil into cylinders or maybe a stuck ring. It seems to smoke on both sides for a minute or two and then just the left (which it leans on the sidestand and maybe oil drains into that side??)

I haven't tried the risolone treatment - wanted a bit more feedback on what may be causing this. What about valve guides being worn?

Maybe it's something I shouldn't worry about so much because in a couple of hundred miles I haven't had to add any oil.

Sounds like it may be the valve stem seals. This wold be a pretty simple and inexpensive fix if only you didn't have to remove the cams, shims, buckets, valve retainers, and valve springs to get at the seals. It wouldn't hurt to try one of the oil treatments that are supposed to revitalize the rubber seals throughout the engine. Also, stick with a good old 20w50 dino juice like Castrol . If this doesn't work, and you get tired enough of the smoke, then you can 'go in' ....

I took a look at the plugs and it's definately cylinder #1. There was oil on the plug. I started it up cold and rechecked the plugs and the plug was oil coated. Sounds serious......

Are the repairs really expensive? I can usually do the work, it's the money that will keep it from getting done.
