No juice to starter

Hey guys, 79xs11sf
I stop to get gas and the starter button had no response. All electrical others are working fine. After push starting it, I got back to my shop and replaced starter button. It didnt help. Wire on back of starter button was hot when ignition switch was on. It has to be a broken wire somewhere because it was working good untill it just went dead. My question is were would I most likely find the broken wire, in the ignition switch or at the starter or??? I will check back for reply's hoping someone can save me a lot of searching for a broke wire.

I would check the starter relay, wiggle the wire at the connection. The next place would be inside the headlight case. check to see if the wires have rubbed/shorted.
I would then try cleaning all the connections between the starter relay and the starter button.

Hey Duster,

The wire to the starter button IS hot, cause when you hit the button, you're providing the final ground for that circuit, grounding to the handlebars and frame!! So...like DiverRay said, the starter relay/solenoid first, by crossing the terminals, and if the starter spins, then it's the relay! There was a recent thread on this, you can take it apart, clean it, the contacts and put it back together and use it!

But, if the starter doesn't spin, could be just corroded wires, pull all connections and clean....can get corrosion where you can't see it.

It's under the right side cover. It will be the device with the heavy gauge battery cables attached to it.

Sorry about the slow reply: I changed the sylinoid since it would crank the starter if I crossed the wires on itbut not with the starter button. It was still doing the same thing untill I was showing a friend what it was doing and the starter button worked??? Grimlins I guess. It has worked every time since?? Duster

Hey Duster,

Sounds like you need to clean the contacts on the starter button, and where it contacts the spring so that it will make a thorough ground contact!
