I have a set of Harley Sportster mufflers to install on my 81 XS11. What would be the effect of not having a crossover?
Slow down so the Harley's can pass!!

    mufflers

Sportster mufflers with no crossover may make your bike sound as flatulent as a Harley.

The crossover helps low-end performance by helping 'balance' the 2 sides, helps improve low-end exhaust scavanging. Those who have switched to non-crossover systems have reported little difference in performance, but this also depends on your riding style and YMMV. In my case Ifrequently pull a trailer, so changes in low-end performance is more noticeable. I stayed with a Jardine 4 - 2 system with balance tube just to be on the safe side, but it seems the difference is more theoretical than practical.

I have Sportster mufflers on my 80 Mongrel sans the crossover pipe. I haven't notice any difference other than it's not as loud as burnt out stock pipes.

The King of Kong likes his Harley muffs. No low end dropoff noticed.
