XJ Stalls when put in gear

I parked my XJ last weekend after a ride. Today I started her up and when I put her in first she stalled. I checked the clutch cable and it appears to be fine. When I engage the clutch the starter doesn't work. I can shift it ok when it isn't running so I don't think it's the clutch. Does anyone have any ideas or things to check out? Thanks, Phill

I'm not familiar with the XJ but had a similar experience on another brand years back. If I recall... which I obviously don't, it was the neutral safety, the side stand switch or that switch for the clutch lever. It's electrical, but I can't 'member just which one.

prometheus578 is right on. Hd it happen a couple days ago on a friends XJ.

The safety switch on the sidestand was hanging a little. I just had him spray the little rod that is actuated by the stand with WD40 and work it back and forth.

      FIXED!
