  • Lost and found... in the oil pan?!?!

So I was having a problem with my bike not shifting into fifth gear. After following TopCatGr58's advice and link, I found out that the fifth gear dowel on the shift drum had fallen out due to that blasted retainer plate getting bend. Of course the dowel was no where in sight from my view point at the shift panel, so I took off the oil pan and wah-lah! I found the dowel. ...and some other parts: a snap ring and a washer. I think the snap ring goes on that hand-shaped shifter pawl, but I'm having a hard time figuring out where that washer came from... and ideas?

I have a picture of the parts, I just dont' know how to post it on here. I'll send it out if it will help. Thanks!

    Hey Corey,

Glad you found the problem and the missing dowel. The C-clip like you said probably goes on the shaft that the Shift pawl is mounted on , to keep it in place! With it off, that could possibly explain how the dowel and it's retaining plate got bent. I couldn't find any reference for a washer amongst those part??

Sometimes if you're shifting gears while going over a bad bump, that can cause Xcessive forces to be applied to the shift lever, and may have contributed to things coming loose? Or just age and fatigue causing the C-clip coming loose?

You'll probably want to take the bolt off the end of the shift drum, remove the plate to be able to get it properly flattened before putting the missing dowel back in. Don't forget to check the shift alignment....those notches on drum and shift pawl, while in 2nd Gear!
