  • XJ1100 Caliper question

I went through all this last year with the front right brake and am back at it again. The brake slowly clamps up tight. I need to clean the MC and brake assembly etc. I did all this last year following all the tread advice on the forum and it seemed to work for a while until it's back to it's old self. Do I just need a thorough cleaning again or am I missing something more? Do I need to rebuild the calipers? If that is the case I can't find any rebuild kits or parts for the right front calipers on the XJ1100. Bike bandit shows some parts available for the left front which is linked to the rear. Are the front L & R parts lnterchangeable? Otherwise any suggestions for parts, ie piston, O-ring or anything else I need?

    Any help is much appreciated.

    Hey there Bryan,

Well, something's clogged, cause the piston isn't returning back into the caliper housing like it should. When you cleaned everything last year, did you also flush/clean the lines!? Are you using the OEM vinyl lines? They can break down and particles can dislodge and flow down into the caliper, again clogging up the return hole. Also, the dreaded Spooge hole in the MC may be clogged?

The parts as listed in the Yamaha Online catalog show 2 identifying numbers on the diagram, like part #6-18, which means that its meant for both left and right calipers. They are the same. You shouldn't have to replace your piston as long as there isn't any severe pitting where the O-ring fits to it! The prices that are on BikeBandit are for the piston set, which is the O-ring AND the Piston. You would probably do better to either get the O-ring from the dealer, or Zanottis.

Partsnmore has the Front MC rebuild kit for the XJ1100! They also have replacement pads. They have the caliper kit ONLY for the rear caliper. Good Luck!
