    Valve adjustment

    Hello all!

Just a heads up for all you wrench monkeys.

I'm working on a 81 XS1100H restore and while lapping in the valves, I took off so much during the lap process that I can't get a feeler gauge between the shim and back side of cam lobe while attempting to set the valves.

The resolution now is to shave the top of the valve stems off to allow enough clearance.

The seat and valve mates appear to be very good, but lesson learned here is too much could be a bad thing and now it's back to the machine shop.

Why not just get a thinner shim? They range from 2.00 thru 3.10 mm.

Full sets of new shims, boxed, are still available on eBay. About $100. You get two of each through the entire range of thicknesses. I was looking at them yesterday. They're in the US

Not really a full set. The "full sets" that are being sold usually only have 20 shims in them, not like the picture they use to advertise them. When I adjusted mine, the #4 intake shim was so tall, there was no space there either. I just grabbed the smallest of the other shims and dropped it in there, using that one for the measurement.

IMO, the proper solution is new valves and seats in the head.
