Oil and air filters for an XJ?

    Hey everyone,

I searched for these questions, but didn't find the answers... I know someone can help:

    1. What oil filter types (model numbers) can I use on my XJ1100?
    2. What air filter type can I use on my XJ1100?

Do I have to buy the Yamaha filters? I thought I saw somewhere, a cross reference for filters?

    Thanks,

    Bill

Oil filter is Fram CH6002 or equal; I happen to use Napa Gold series #4933 because I can't find any Fram filters locally. Both filters come withthe 2 "O" rings, one for the filter houseing and one for the bolt. These are the same filters used on all XS 11 models.

Air filter is a different story. There is no XJ1100 after-market filter out there, some parts book listings are in error. (I'm talking standard air box, not individual filters.) One poster on this list modified his airbox to accept an alternate filter, but if you are not into construction, your only option is the factory unit.

Yamaha part number is 10M-14451-00-00 element, air cleaner.

Wix 24933. It's the same as NAPA Gold I think.

Yep Jerry's nailed it and it's very frustrating. The only option I've found is Yamaha. I fear they may become "discontinued" in the near future so I ordered two the other day. It may take 3-4 weeks to get them though.

However...I burned my AF up somehow recently. So to have air filter protection I cut the paper off the OEM filter that had caught fire. Then I cut and fit a piece of air filter type foam to the OEM metal frame. I glued the edges of it to the frame with contact cement and let it cure for a couple days. So far so good...at least until I get a OEM. I can't tell any performance difference so I assume it is ok.

Here is a link to a place that is offering our oil filter in a "close-out" sale.
They are only $1.90 each, but with shipping, you would need to get several to be really tempting.

Thanks for the heads up. Just ordered 10 filters....

Here in the boonies that comes out to about half price, $25.95 for the 10. Napa price, with tax, is over $5.00 each.

Now I have a question. My bike did not come with an air box so I had to find one on ebay. This was a while back and I forget what year XS the box was off of. Then I bought a K&N filter for it off ebay (think it was for an 81, but again not sure). Long story short, the filter is too tall for the box. Any ideas what the year/part conflict is here?

              Hey there JC,

The air filter elements are the same for all models, 78-81 standard and specials, so....not sure what box you got cause IF you got the right filter, it should fit any XS box!! Those filters fit snugly, IIRC it fits over a plastic ridge, so if it's not seated completely it may seem too tall. Also, was the box in parts when you got it. They can be a real pain to put back together if totally disassembled, and the PO may have done so prior to sending it to you, so it might not be put together exactly right!?!?

Yes it was in parts so I either didn't put it together right or it is the wrong filter, I guess.

Hi, you mention the Fram CH6002 for the XJ, will this same filter work on a 79 XS1100 special?

Before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their
shoes. That way, when you criticize them, you're a mile away
                  and you have their shoes.

Yep! Or the Wix 24933. My local auto parts chain store quoted me $3.98 for the Fram CH6002 but I'm running the Wix cause another store had it in stock for (ouch!) $7.98. I just ordered some Frams. I understand that some Walmart stores carry the Frams but my local one doesn't.

The same filter also fits the xs750-850, and the Venture, from what I understand

I clicked on the link for surdike and then on a bunch of their links but never came up with a part number, do you have it? I just ordered 1 air filter and 2 oil filters from motogrid, paid 23.64 for the air and 4.74 for the oil, next time I'm looking local for the oil but I will be needing more air filters since I am now riding daily. Hey a buck sixty-four is alot nowadays!
