  • Help with crankshaft seals

I'm rebuilding the engine on my XJ and ordered new crankshaft end seals according to the part #'s in the microfiche (2 different part #'s).

The left side is lipped and the other isn't, but the crankcase halves look like both sides should be lipped!
Is This correct? It just doesn't look right to me.

    Uh Oh!

The original seals were lipped or had a ridge on them that needed to sit into a groove in the crankcase. I changed mine last year, and one of the new ones had no ridge. It would have tapped into place, but the other did have the ridge. I removed the old seals with a dent puller and a small screwdriver used as a pry bar. I removed the ridge from the seal with a bench grinder. I tried to tap it into place, but I didnt have any luck. I damaged the seal, I ordered another one, and thenI pulled the egine, and split the case to install the new seal. If you want to avoid pulling the engine , then buy three or four seals, and grind the ridge off off them, and try your luck.

I've got the engine completely tore down. I think I'll bolt the cases together and see if the seal with no lip is a press fit. If it isn't I'll order another seal like the other side has.

Not necessary to grind the lips off. Get seals the proper size from an industrial supply house. They are a common size, but the ridge is unique to Yamaha. Either bring them with you and let them measure, or get the number off the seals. Just tap them in straight and there should be no problems.

If you get OEM seals, they will be as I described. I ordered mine from Bikebandit, and they were OEM. About $6-7 each. I don't know if the lipped style is still available from them, but that is what the Yamaha seals look like. The one with out the ridge is a press fit. Well, it fits snugly in the bore, anyway. I had the cases apart also, so I just stuck it over the end of the crank and reassembled it.
