  • High mileage?

    Hi, I have had my 80G XS for about 4 weeks now and I love it.
    Before buying it I did not know anything about XS's.
    It runs pretty good but when I bought it it had 93,200 miles on it. At first this worried me but it doesn't so much anymore.
    Is this a lot of miles that might warrant some attention?
    Who else on this forum has bikes that have this many miles or more?
    This forum is a GREAT wealth of iformation, I have learned so much good stuff, and very glad I was luicky enough to get an XS

    Chance are the speedo is not the original one and even if it is... if it is running right don't worry. If the compression checks good and no smoke coming from the exhaust, no loud or strange noise coming from the Engine...Rock on.

      Here's a silly question... What is the highest indicated speed on the speedo? Is it 85, 140, or 160?

            What years did they do that silly 85mph speedo stuff - 81-82?

                I've known a few XSive types that have gotten in XS of 100K miles BMO (before major overhaul). And that was years ago...BSO (before synthetic oils) .

                I understand using synthetics that are specifically designed for wet clutches radically increase engine life on AIR COOLED engines. It's not as critical on liquid cooled motors because they are more consistent maintaining cylinder temps. But air cooled engines really stand a lot to gain using synthetics especially in hot stop and go traffic where there is little if any air flow around the jugs.

                  Yes I am aware of that on most motors it is good but there are many many post stating many many problems when Synthetic oil was used on the Xs

                    Ya know for some reason I'm thinking most of those problems were with earlier synths...before they were designed with wet clutches in mind.

                    All I ever heard of was clutch slippage due to the friction modifiers.

                    Had you heard of other problems?

                    I've got a buddy in Texas that swear by synth. He said before he switched he did his own little test. He drove his air cooled bike down the road (10 miles at 80 mph) on a 100 degree day with mineral oil. Ten miles and stopped. Dropped a candy thermometer in the dip stick hole and registered the temp.

                    Went back to the shop and changed oil to synthetic. Drove the same strecth of road (10 miles at 80 mph). Same test. He claims his oil temp fell by 27 degrees.

                    Interesting data. I dunno if I am ready to totally switch yet.

                      ok so what synthetic oil is good for the wet clutch. I ran some through my bike when if first came out and found the clutch slipped, went back to dino oil. I am planning a long trip this may and would like to use a better oil if its available.

                      First bike was an: 1978 XS1100
                      Second bike is an FJR1300.
                      Now I'm restoring a '79 XS1100.

                        Mobil One claims their MX4T...10w-40 is good for wet clutch bikes. I've used it in Zilla and had no noticable trouble with slippage.

                        Royal Purple makes a cycle specific oil and so does Amsoil. They all claim it's ok for wet clutches. But who knows.

                        I've heard some guys say it won't nake a clutch slip...but if the clutch is already worn it might.....hmmmm...dunno about that one.

                          We could talk about motor oil till the cows come home,but the simple answere is, use what Yamaha recommends.Those little guys in the white coats are not stupid you know.

                            There has been extensive research on this subject. I found a few answers in the tech tips colum. There's a guy out in Cal. That did alot of research on different types of oils and his conclusion was that the oil that I use, and think is the best dino stuff, He says is the worst. I tried my own research and have settled with Kawa-chem 20-50 dino oil. My motor runs quieter and cooler then with car oil. ( Castrol 20-50 ) Amsoil makes a synthetic lube that is designed specifically
                            for motorcycles with wet clutches. ( as well as other lubes for aother applications. ) There are alot of answers to what kind of oil to use. keep in mind that if you do try synthetics, Use a synthetic that's got friction modifiers. Oil should be slippery but too slippery is almost as bad as not slipperey enough.

                              synthetic oil changing

                              I don't know about motorcycle gaskets but I do know that if you use synthetic oil in an old car with old gaskets you will develop leaks. The synthetic oil will weep into the gaskets and sometimes pass through them creating an oil leak. Sometimes the leak stops sometimes it does not.
                              I think a mororcycle uses more o rings and rubbver seals than a car but I do expect there might be a few leaks, can anyone verify this?
