  • Dual Tanks???

an YBODY ever build dual tanks?
i was on vacation last summer and i seen a japanese built bike that someone made a dual tank for!

Do you mean like the tanks h-d uses? I guess you could use two tanks, cut one in half, and then cut sections out of the other and weld them up, to make a dual tank, but there would be a problem with the filler neck. I suppose a clever man could cut the filler from one, make a hole in the tank half, and weld the filler in on the left tank half.
    Hmmmm...

yeah, the dual tank i seen had two fillers.
i always thought the xs had a small tank for the size of the bike!
i'm not sure about cutting and welding on gas tanks.....scary!!!

That was probably an "after market" tank. I remember you could buy those to fit almost anything. They didn't hold all that much gas, just looked good, in a HD style.
I think building a tank from the pan of an old one, or just from scratch would be the only way to get a larger tank.

6.5 gallon tank I just got off Ebay is plenty big. The stock 5.5 has been big enough too. I've only ridden the MN Special around town but I think it will make it from one gas station to the next with no problem. The fuel light came on at 92 miles and I went to 100 without switching to reserve.
I try to take breaks at around 100 miles when travelling to refuel, stretch, and use the restroom. I use a camelback when travelling so dehydration is not a problem, quite the opposite .

            6.5 gallon tank

Pat I'm glad I didn't bid against you. I almost did but money right now is tight. Well at least S.W.M.B.O thinks I've spent to much already on the restore. Never coudn't happen. I love this bike. She may have to go but not the ride.
There's always a way, figure it out.

I get 150 miles plus from 6.5 tank when playing a little bit, about 135 when misbehaving (constant 85 +).

Hmm... I get that milage from the standard 24 liter tank. When misbehaving a bit. Just calculated today... 248,5 km and filled it with 19,4 liters.
But my gas tank has lotsa stuff stuck on it to keep it in shape. Literally. Front right side is gone. Looks like a potatoe turned inside out.
Eh, well... maybe in a year or two... a new gas tank... I spent too much time getting this one presentable and usable.

                  Gas Milage

You know, i also get about 140 miles w/o reserve out of my special's 4.1 gallon tank.

And that is not enough, so I have a standard tank I am restoring now.
I've been in more than one Hemisphere, and I wrote a book to help you do it too (or just prepare better for that week long road trip). Going Small, not just for the little guys.

                    tank mod

Nope,, i think something can be done about this delema,, of course not by me but someone has the artistic ablilities to improve on capacity and style. Tomorrow I am going to have to check out the rumors about a guy (H-D guy) who loves this kind of challenge.. Will report later ..
