  • XJ Overcharging?

Long time no post. Now I need some help.
My XJ is on the fritz. Head lamp keeps burning out. I've replaced it twice making sure not to touch the glass, and after about a day or so of riding, the light goes out. Backup lighting kicks in but intermittently there is no light at all.

I tried diagnosing but Im not the best when it comes to things mechanical or electrical. I do know that my battery terminals look like they are getting pretty hot. They've melted.

I checked DC Voltage with revved RPMs and get 17.88v A little high eh?

    What next? Thanks!

17.88 is way too high. Sounds like you need a voltage regulator. That will boil the battery dry in no time.
If you should need one, pm me.

          thanks

Thanks fellas. Is there a way to check with a volt meter if the regulator is bad? How would a guy go about doing that? Any links to help me out?

          thanks

            what the manuals say......

most manuals say to check the ohms between this connection, and that connection, and also give figures as to what range they should also fall between. Unfortunetly, these same manuals often state that just because they fall within the range, or are out of the range, doesn't really mean that the regulator is good/bad. (helps alot, huh?)
All the regulator does is first convert the AC from the generator to DC current, and then regulate what voltage of that to send to the battery. Obviously, your generator is putting out like it should, but the regulator is not adjusting the voltage down for you.

It could be worse... you could have not enough voltage going to the battery, and then have to play the song and dance as to where's the prob, generator or regulator, with the manuals playing their ohms game, too.

            I'd go for the regulator.

              all good

Regulator it was. Got one in the mail from John (thanks!!!) hooked it up and get 14.55 volts at 3500rpm. Much better. Now I need a new battery.

Hey there young feller, is that the same XJ you had at Sids for the Big Island duece? you had elec. problems then too! What did your Dad do with his XJ? I need to get a hold of him 'cause my first gear is just about shot and I have a million questions to ask him.
And I can't find his old posts and pictoral on how to fix 1st gear.

Could you get your Dad to email me,
                Thanks,
